International Kitesurf Competition Festival on the widest beach of the North Sea
Sankt Peter-Ording (SPO) is a municipality with around 3,900 inhabitants in the Nordfriesland district (Schleswig-Holstein), located on the Eiderstedt peninsula. With its 12 km long sandy beach (the widest beach in Germany), its vast mudflat world, and the steady west/northwest wind, SPO is among the world-renowned watersports spots — surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, wingfoiling, land sailing, kite flying.
The California Cup series is a series of events spread throughout the season at the "California" beach spot in SPO — named after the historic beach sauna and its associated "California" bistro. Throughout a season, the series coordinates:
The Kitesurf Masters bring athletes from several disciplines to the beach: Freestyle (tricks and jumps), Wave (kitesurfing in waves), Big Air (highest jumps), Boarder Cross (slalom). International judging follows the International Kiteboarding Association regulations; the world's best athletes regularly participate.
In addition to the competitions, the concept includes beach sports workshops, live music on the beach, beach bars, and gastronomic offerings. The audience comes not only from the watersports scene but also from family tourism, which characterizes SPO in the summer anyway.
The Kitesurf Masters 2026 runs as the core competition of the California Cup series from August 19 to 23, 2026. International kitesurf athletes travel for the competitions, and the audience from the watersports scene and family tourism fills the beach bars and the competition area.
The athletes compete in four disciplines: Freestyle (tricks, turns, combinations), Wave (kitesurfing in waves), Big Air (highest jumps — the most spectacular competition), Boarder Cross (slalom through buoys). International judging.
Admission to the competition area is free. SPO beach card required for the designated beach area.
By car: A23/B5 towards Eiderstedt, then B202 to Sankt Peter-Ording. Approx. 2.5 hours from Hamburg. By train: SPO main station, ICE connection via Husum.
Access to the beach is free (SPO beach card required for designated beach areas). Competition area is publicly accessible.
Festival dates vary slightly depending on wind and weather — the organizers specify the core period of August 19–23, 2026, with possible adjustments.
