Family Pirate Fair with Fire Show on the Historic Island
The Piratentage are one of the most popular family festivals on the North Sea coast. On the Historische Insel in St. Peter-Dorf β a thatched-roof old building ensemble with an inn, chapel, and historic buildings β a complete pirate world is set up over four days: pirate camps with tents and fires, market stalls with pirate crafts, mock battles, and acrobatics shows.
The focus is on the family experience. Numerous activities take place over the four days:
The highlight for the youngest guests is the Pirate School with the famous Captain Black β a cult figure of the festival who has been teaching children in pirate style for years: knot tying, saber strokes, map reading, ship maneuver commands. Those who pass all disciplines receive their pirate certificate at the end.
On the colorful market, traders sell authentic pirate handicrafts: jewelry, leather goods, wooden toys, books, costumes. For food and drink, classic sea fare is the focus: fish and crabs, spit-roasted meat, rum specialties for adults, mead, and beer.
Every evening there is a professional fire show β a highlight that bathes the pirate world in dramatic light at night. Acrobatics, fire-breathing, light art, and live music make every evening a spectacle for the whole family. In addition, jugglers, acrobats, and magicians perform, offering activities between the camps and in the market square.
The October date is deliberately chosen: The summer tourist high season is over, but the autumn holidays still attract families to the coast. The Piratentage fill exactly this gap and extend the season by four days. St. Peter-Ording itself β as Schleswig-Holstein's most prominent seaside resort in the district of Nordfriesland β offers the ideal surroundings: stilt houses on the beach, an adventure promenade, thatched houses.
As in previous years, the festival starts with the opening on Thursday afternoon and runs continuously until Sunday evening. The St. Peter-Ording Tourism Office has announced that the complete 2026 program will be published on the festival website in late summer.
Detailed program will be published at st-peter-ording.de/piratentage.
By train to St. Peter-Ording, then bus from the station or a ten-minute walk to the St. Peter-Dorf district. By car via the B202. Parking is signposted in St. Peter-Dorf.
Most of the program is free (market, camps); individual workshops and the fire show have their own charges. Details at st-peter-ording.de/piratentage.
Outdoor activities continue in case of rain β weatherproof clothing recommended, October by the sea is windy.
