Chamber concerts and organ recitals in the Benedictine Abbey of Metten
The Benedictine Abbey of Metten in the Lower Bavarian market town of Metten – in the district of Deggendorf in the state of Bavaria – has existed for over 1,250 years. The monks once settled on the northern bank of the Danube; the abbey continues to shape the region culturally to this day. With the concert series »Concerts at Metten Abbey«, the abbey opens its atmospheric spaces for a varied musical program.
The program spans a wide arc throughout the year: it begins with a cheerful carnival concert in the brewhouse, followed by Lenten music in the baroque abbey church, chamber concerts with scholarship holders from the Bavarian State Orchestra, a symphonic evening, contemporary works, a baroque matinee on historical instruments, organ concerts, and piano trios featuring works by Mozart, Schumann, and others.
The concerts take place in various locations within the abbey – in the abbey church, the festival hall, the brewhouse, the Himmelbergschlösschen, or the Wittelsbacher Saal. Each room lends its own atmosphere to the concert, from the festive acoustics of the baroque church to the intimate ambiance for chamber music.
The series combines high-quality chamber and sacred music with the special ambiance of a living Benedictine abbey. Some concerts – particularly the Lenten music and the organ concerts in the abbey church – are free of charge, while others are offered at moderate prices.
