Traditional strong beer tapping with Arcobräu Coronator at the Stadthalle Deggendorf
The strong beer season is a Bavarian tradition with centuries of history. Originally, monks brewed a particularly strong beer in spring to make fasting more bearable. Today, the strong beer season between Ash Wednesday and Easter is a firm part of the Bavarian festival calendar. In Deggendorf, the Lower Bavarian Danube town in the Deggendorf district, the Coronator Anstich takes place annually – the largest strong beer festival in the region.
The namesake beer, Coronator, is brewed by the Arcobräu Gräfliches Brauhaus in neighboring Moos, one of Bavaria's oldest private breweries. The double bock is dark, malty-sweet, with a fine spiciness and an original gravity of around 18 percent. Its high alcohol content (over 7 percent) and full-bodied flavor make it the perfect accompaniment to a lively strong beer festival night.
The event begins with the traditional tapping – the ceremonial hammering of the tap into the first barrel. Afterwards, the team from Partyservice & Catering Stephan Fuchs serves hearty Bavarian specialties: pork knuckle, pretzels, Obatzda, Leberkäse, sausage platters, and more. The band Sappralot ensures a good mood all evening with Bavarian hits, Schlager, and party music. From 10 p.m., a DJ takes over the disco bar in the Stadthalle foyer and plays for the younger guests.
The Stadthallen Deggendorf on Edlmairstraße are the largest event center in the city and are centrally located just a few minutes' walk from the town square. Hall 2, with its size and acoustics, offers the ideal setting for a classic strong beer festival with a stage program and dance floor. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis; table reservations through the organizer are recommended.
The Coronator Anstich combines old Bavarian customs with a modern event format. Bavarian traditional costume is welcome, but not mandatory. The minimum age is 16 years. With its Bavarian brewing tradition, Lower Bavarian mentality, and central location in Deggendorf, the Coronator Anstich is a fixed spring date in the event calendar of the state of Bavaria.
