Saerbeck and its 1797 Marksmen

Saerbeck is a municipality in the Münsterland region in the Steinfurt district (North Rhine-Westphalia) with almost 7,500 inhabitants — located about 15 kilometers northeast of Münster, in the heart of the Münsterland. The municipality is known regionally for its „Bioenergiepark Saerbeck" concept — a consistent transition to renewable energies that has made the municipality a model climate community in Germany. Despite this modern pioneering role, Saerbeck cultivates its traditional club structures — and the Bürgerschützenverein Saerbeck-Dorf of 1797 is one of its oldest pillars.

225+ Years of Club History

The club was founded in 1797 — almost 230 years ago, during the late phase of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. This makes it one of the oldest marksmen's clubs in the Münsterland and in all of North Rhine-Westphalia. The tradition has been continuously maintained over five generations — through times of war, industrialization, municipal reforms — and is a vibrant part of Saerbeck's identity today.

Festival Days June 19-21, 2026

The Schützenfest spans three days with the following program structure:

Thursday, June 19, 2026 — Preliminary Program and Youth Shooting

  • 2:30 PM: Reception at the Vereinslokal Dahms Hoff
  • Sternkönig-Schießen: Members of the club compete for the title of Sternkönig — a special honor within the marksmen's hierarchy
  • Jungkönig-Schießen: The younger generation of marksmen determines their own king
  • Determination of the Kinderkönig: Children's marksmanship is fostered through a dedicated children's shooting event
  • Coffee and cake buffet
  • Cozy get-together at the Vogelstange

Friday, June 20, 2026 — King Shooting

  • 2:00 PM: Königs- und Kaiserschießen — the official shooting at the wooden bird at the Vogelstange. The last shot determines the new monarch — the reigning Emperor makes his final appearance before the successor's coronation
  • Evening marquee program

Saturday, June 21, 2026 — Schützen Procession and King's Ball

  • Morning: Schützenmesse (Marksmen's Mass)
  • Afternoon: Grand Schützen procession through Saerbeck-Dorf with the new monarch
  • Evening: King's Ball in the marquee

Münsterland Marksmen's Heritage

Marksmanship in the Münsterland — the region between the Lippe, Ems, and the Dutch border — is deeply rooted. For centuries, marksmen's clubs have been central social institutions here, structuring village and town life. The Bürgerschützenverein Saerbeck-Dorf of 1797 fits into this tradition — as one of the oldest and most continuous representatives.

Location and Travel

Saerbeck is centrally located in the Münsterland, about 15 kilometers northeast of Münster. By car: A 1 exit Greven or A 33 exit Tecklenburg, then to the municipality. By public transport: Münsterland public transport bus lines from Münster or Rheine. Münster is easily accessible by ICE/IC from Berlin, Hanover, and the Rhine-Ruhr region.
