Authentic Viking and Slavic life on the Baltic Sea beach of Rügen
On Rügen, history is particularly closely linked to the sea: Viking trade routes, Slavic castles, and the famous Arkona temple fortress shaped the island over 1,000 years ago. The Viking Days Göhren make this past tangible for visitors – not as a spectacle, but as a carefully researched open-air living museum.
The camp is open from 11 am to 10 pm. The day is structured with lectures, music sets, and show fights so that visitors can find something happening at any time of day: lectures and music at midday, show fights on the coast in the afternoon, concerts in the evening, and finally the fire show around 9:30 pm.
The event is organized by the Göhren Baltic Sea Resort administration (Poststraße 9). Embedded in Mönchgut, one of Rügen's most culturally and historically rich areas, the Viking Days are part of a broad summer program offered by the administration for families, hikers, and culture enthusiasts. In the Vorpommern-Rügen district, the Viking Days are among the most visited medieval spectacles in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Children are explicitly invited to participate in camp life: blacksmith workshops, archery with supervision, and making their own glass beads are offered. Those who want more can combine the visit with a hike to the nearby steep coast or a ride on the "Rasender Roland," the historic narrow-gauge railway to Putbus.
The program follows a timed daily schedule: 12 pm lecture on the Gods of Rügen, 1 pm Daridel concert, 2 pm show fight on the beach, 4 pm Daridel again, 5:30 pm second show fight, 6:30 pm lecture on Rügen's Viking connections, 7:30 pm grand evening concert with Daridel, 9:30 pm fire show to conclude the day. In between, there are craft demonstrations, archery with supervision, and camp life that invites visitors to participate.
