One of Cologne's largest street festivals – multicultural neighbourhood festival on Venloer Straße
If you're in Cologne in August and want to experience the real Cologne neighbourhood feeling, the Straßenfest Ehrenfeld on Venloer Straße is a must-visit. With around 300,000 visitors over the weekend, it's one of the city's largest street festivals, and undoubtedly the most multicultural. Organiser von der Gathen – the Cologne-based event company that organises many of the city's largest district festivals – uses Ehrenfeld's creative energy as the festival's foundation.
The Venloer Straße is Cologne's 6 km long traffic artery from Friesenplatz in the city centre to Köln-Vogelsang. For the street festival, the central Ehrenfeld section (between Ehrenfeldgürtel and Eisenbahnstraße) is closed off – about 1.5 km of the street becomes a pedestrian zone. Since the 1990s, this artery has been the backbone of Ehrenfeld's hipster and subculture scene: record stores, cafés, vegan restaurants, comic shops, late-night bars, independent theatres, and artist studios line the street.
The festival is spread across several stages – usually three to four – with different musical focuses:
Characteristic of Ehrenfeld is its multicultural street food scene. The local communities present their cuisines directly in front of their shops:
Hundreds of stalls line the closed street: artisans, vintage clothing, flea market finds, jewellery, books, vinyl records, hand-printed T-shirts, vegan cosmetics. The Ehrenfeld street festival is not just a Volksfest (public festival), but also a marketplace for local creatives – designers, illustrators, and craftspeople present their work directly to buyers.
The Ehrenfeld district is located northwest of Cologne's Old Town and is considered the city's most creative and colourful neighbourhood. Historically a working-class district with a large Turkish immigrant population from the 1960s onwards, Ehrenfeld transformed into a hipster district in the 2000s – without losing its multicultural DNA. The Helios Lichtspielhaus Kulturfabrik, Bumann & Sohn, Heimatklänge, and dozens of bars and clubs form their own nightlife universe.
Travel is strictly by public transport: KVB lines 3, 4, and 5 stop directly on Venloer Straße, KVB S-Bahn S11/S12/S13 to Köln-Ehrenfeld or Köln Hauptbahnhof, then continue by U-Bahn. The festival is free; glass bottles and own drinks are prohibited for safety reasons.
The complete stage and stall programme will be announced shortly before the festival on strassenfeste.koeln and in the local media. Based on experience, the 2026 festival will likely consist of:
Multicultural offerings: Turkish Lahmacun and Adana, Polish Pierogi, Vietnamese Pho, Italian Pizza, Arabic Falafel, vegan bowls.
