New Year's Eve with mulled wine, live music, and fireworks at the pier
While other places move their New Year's Eve parties into enclosed halls, Göhren opts for the opposite: the Strandkorbsilvester brings the turn of the year to the Baltic Sea, to the Bernsteinpromenade, and under the vast sky over Mönchgut. Three days of programming, every day from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, turn the last days of the year into a small festival.
Strandkörbe – those typically East Frisian/Baltic Sea seating furniture – are the visual leitmotif: they stand along the promenade, serve as sheltered seating against the wind, and give the festival its name. Add to this the wide view of the 280-meter-long pier, from the end of which the fireworks are launched. The reflection of the lights in the water, the wind mixing salt and sparks – memories that bring many regular guests back to Rügen year after year.
The Strandkorbsilvester is organized by the Kurverwaltung Ostseebad Göhren (Poststraße 9). In the Vorpommern-Rügen district, the event is one of the most attractive New Year's Eve destinations away from the big cities and fits Mönchgut's character as a biosphere reserve: more cozy than loud, with a clear connection to tradition and nature.
The first two days are characterized by cozy mulled wine parties with live music in the evening, plus a market with snacks, punch, and crafts. December 31st begins familiarly and escalates into a grand New Year's Eve party with a live band; midnight fireworks over the pier conclude the year. The organizer is the Kurverwaltung Ostseebad Göhren.
Free admission to the entire program, including the New Year's Eve party and fireworks. Food and drinks available on site.
Car: A 20 to Stralsund, then continue via Rügendamm and B 196. Parking available at the town entrance.
Train: Bergen auf Rügen station, then bus or the narrow-gauge railway "Rasender Roland" (check winter timetable).
Free access on all three days, including the New Year's Eve party and fireworks. Food and drinks available at the stands and in surrounding restaurants.
For the fireworks, pack warm clothing, a hat, and a blanket – the wind on the Bernsteinpromenade can be biting even in milder winters. Book accommodation well in advance.
