An Old Market Regulation on the Feast of Mary

The Zeller Sommerkirchweih follows a centuries-old market regulation of the market town of Zell in the Fichtelgebirge: It takes place every year on the Sunday after the Visitation of Mary (July 2nd) — and if July 2nd falls on a Sunday, then on that very day. This means it always falls in the first week of July. In 2026, the Visitation of Mary is on a Thursday (July 2nd), so the Sommerkirchweih will take place on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

Zell Market Square as Festival Grounds

The entire Zell market square becomes the festival grounds: Vendors, snack stands from local clubs, artisans, and market traders from the Fichtelgebirge and Frankenwald region offer their goods. A unique feature of the Zell market: No stall or space fees are charged to vendors — a conscious promotional policy by the municipality for local market life.

Summer Kirchweih vs. Autumn Kirchweih — Two Dates, Two Moods

Zell distinguishes between two annual Kirchweihen: the Sommerkirchweih on the Sunday after July 2nd and the Herbstkirchweih on the Sunday after October 16th (St. Gallus). The summer edition is brighter, friendlier, and more tourist-oriented — hikers and summer vacationers from the Fichtelgebirge are out and about at the market. The autumn edition around Gallus, on the other hand, traditionally marks the end of the season and is more closely linked to local farmers' market and harvest themes.

The Sommerkirchweih is a real market day — not a folk festival with carousels and a festival tent. The focus is on strolling through the market square, trying regional specialties (Bratwurst, Brotzeit, Fichtelgebirge cakes), and enjoying the summer Franconian weather together. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the old annual markets of the 19th century — relaxed, social, traditional.
