Traditional Allerweltskirchweih on the Sunday after October 16th
The Zeller Herbstkirchweih is popularly known as Allerweltskirchweih – a term that emphasizes its function beyond purely religious significance: it is a market to which all the world is invited. The fixed date on the Sunday after October 16th is linked to the commemoration of St. Gallus, an Irish-Frankish missionary monk from the early 7th century, considered one of the pioneers of Christianization in the southern German region.
The market enlivens the market square in the center of Zell throughout the day. Traders set up their stalls, offering a diverse range of goods: household items, textiles, sweets, toys, regional handicrafts, and seasonal specialties. Local restaurants complement the market experience with hearty cuisine and Franconian beer. Celebrations take place both indoors in the pubs and outdoors at the stalls.
Zell im Fichtelgebirge follows an old Upper Franconian tradition with two annual Kirchweih festivals: the Sommerkirchweih takes place on the Sunday after July 2nd (Visitation of Mary), and the Herbstkirchweih follows on the Sunday after October 16th. Both dates are not arbitrary but firmly anchored in the calendar of saints – the patron saints of former churches and chapels set the rhythm. This creates a structure that organizes the entire year.
Zell im Fichtelgebirge likes to call itself the Gateway to the Fichtelgebirge: the market community is located on the northern slope of the mountains and serves as a starting point for hikes to Waldstein, Großer Kornberg, and Hohe Matze. With around 1700 inhabitants, Zell is manageable – the Herbstkirchweih is therefore not a mass event, but an authentic, easily accessible market with character.
In 2026, Zell will once again uphold the Allerweltskirchweih tradition. The market day on October 18th will bring traders from the entire region to the market community, setting up their stalls in the market square. The range of goods includes household items, regional products, and seasonal market wares for autumn supplies.
The restaurants in the town center will be open throughout the festival – the Herbstkirchweih is suitable for bad weather, as a large part of the activities can be moved indoors.
