Living community brewing culture in the secret Zoigl capital
A unique beer culture, Zoigl, lives on in the northern Upper Palatinate. Alongside Eslarn, Falkenberg, and Mitterteich, Windischeschenbach and its district Neuhaus in the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district are among the five "capitals" of Zoigl brewing. Here, Zoigl is not a souvenir, but lived reality and identity.
Zoigl is brewed in the Kommunbrauhaus: a communal brewery owned by several citizens. Each community brewer brews their wort there according to an old process, ferments it at home, and then serves the finished beer in their own Zoiglstube (parlour). The hanging six-pointed Zoiglstern indicates when it is being served – the symbol of this culture. The brand "Echter Zoigl vom Kommunbrauer" stands for originality, tradition, and quality.
The Zoigl taverns in Windischeschenbach and Neuhaus – including Beim Gloser, im Schlosshof, Binner, Zum Roud'n, and Fiedlschneider – open in rotating succession throughout the year, from spring dates starting in March through December. Each serving usually lasts for an extended weekend (Friday to Monday or Tuesday) and resembles a small Volksfest (folk festival): a hearty atmosphere, delicious Upper Palatinate snacks, and conviviality. The current Zoigl calendar can be found on platforms like zoiglbier.de.
In 2018, the Upper Palatinate Zoigl culture was added to the national inventory of intangible cultural heritage according to the UNESCO convention. This officially recognizes Zoigl culture as a living tradition worthy of protection – a piece of lived identity of the Upper Palatinate Forest.
The 2026 Zoigl season in Windischeschenbach and the district of Neuhaus extends throughout the entire year: The Zoigl taverns – including Beim Gloser, Schlosshof, Binner, Zum Roud'n, and Fiedlschneider – open in rotating succession. The first serving dates are in March 2026 (including March 13–16 and March 20–23), with more following monthly until December. The tavern "Zum Roud'n", for instance, will serve from April 3–6, May 8–10, June 5–7, July 17–19, September 4–6, October 2–4, November 6–8, and December 11–13, 2026. Each serving is recognizable by the Zoigl star and resembles a small folk festival with hearty snacks. The exact, continuously updated calendar can be viewed at zoiglbier.de.
Windischeschenbach is located in the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district, accessible via the A93 (Windischeschenbach exit) and by train (Weiden–Neustadt/WN line). The Zoigl taverns are located in Windischeschenbach and the district of Neuhaus.
Admission is free; Zoigl and snacks are paid for. The respective serving parlour is open (Zoiglstern as a sign).
Check the current Zoigl calendar before visiting (e.g., zoiglbier.de), as the parlours open in rotation.
