Four Decades of Bochum District Festival
The Volksfest an den Grummer Teichen turns forty in 2026 — a respectable record for a district festival that runs without major sponsors and without commercial aims. Organized by the Bochum-Mitte district representation together with Bochum Marketing, the festival is firmly anchored in the event calendar of the Ruhr area and attracts families from Grumme, Hofstede, Riemke, and Bochum city center. The festival meadow at Kaiseraue, nestled between the idyllic Grummer Teiche, offers the perfect backdrop for a down-to-earth summer weekend.
Saturday and Sunday Program
It opens on Saturday at 2 PM with a stage program featuring bands, DJs, dance groups, choirs, and children's performances — a typical Bochum mix of carnival club, association music, and pop cover bands. Sunday starts at 10:30 AM with the traditional ecumenical service on the festival meadow, followed by a morning pint and family program. For children, there are bouncy castles, face painting, craft activities, and a carousel.
Craft Market and Model Boat Building
A special feature of the Grumme festival is the craft market, which runs throughout the weekend alongside the stage. Jewelry, pottery, woodwork, knitwear, and natural cosmetics from the region are offered here by small manufacturers and hobby artists. A second Bochum specialty: The Bochum Model Boat Club uses the Grummer Teiche as a "natural stage" and demonstrates remote-controlled boats and submarines on the weekend — a fascinating show that particularly captivates children.
Grumme and the Pond Landscape
The Grummer Teiche are a small natural idyll in the otherwise densely built-up northern Bochum. Three interconnected ponds, surrounded by meadows, walking paths, and old trees, form a green oasis in the Ruhr metropolis. The Volksfest makes optimal use of this landscape: The festival meadow is located directly on the Kaiseraue pond, and the stage is positioned to leave enough space on the meadow for picnic blankets and folding chairs. Free admission, food and drink at Volksfest prices, family program without cost barriers — this is district festival in the best sense.
