The Fifth Season of Bamberg's Gardeners' Town
For the gardeners of Bamberg, the Corpus Christi procession is the “fifth season” – the religious and social highlight of the year. First documented in 1390, the procession has taken its current form since the 17th century, always taking place on the Thursday after the first Sunday after Pentecost. It is among the most significant traditions of faith in the Archdiocese of Bamberg and is closely linked to the city's history as an archiepiscopal seat.
Bamberg, located in the Upper Franconian district and city of Bamberg, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993 – not least because of its uniquely preserved Gardeners' Town. The "Upper" and "Lower" Gardeners, along with the vine growers (Häcker), have shaped the cityscape for centuries. On Corpus Christi, they decorate their streets and gardens with fresh birch greenery, flowers, and flags. Several altars adorned with flowers are set up along the procession route, where the procession pauses for prayer.
The festival day begins with a solemn Pontifical Mass on the Cathedral Square, celebrated by the Archbishop together with the Cathedral Chapter and the city's pastors. Afterwards, the grand city procession winds through the Old Town. In the Gardeners' Town, the Eucharist begins at the Church of St. Gangolf, from where the procession proceeds through Mittelstraße, Siechenstraße, and Königstraße. Young gardeners carry saint figures artfully adorned with flowers, particularly the images of Saint Sebastian and Saint Mary Magdalene, the patron saints of gardeners.
The Corpus Christi procession is thus far more than a church festival – it is a living testament to Upper Franconian popular piety and the unique Bamberg gardening culture.
The 2026 edition of the Corpus Christi procession takes place on Thursday, June 4, 2026. The day begins with the solemn Pontifical Mass on the Cathedral Square at 8 a.m., celebrated by the Archbishop together with the Cathedral Chapter. Afterwards, the grand city procession and the traditional Gardeners' Procession wind through the historic Old Town and the UNESCO World Heritage Gardeners' Town. The streets around Mittelstraße, Siechenstraße, and Königstraße are decorated with birch greenery, flowers, and flags, and several station altars invite prayer.
Attendance at the procession is free and open to the public.
Bamberg is easily accessible via the A70 and A73 motorways and by train (ICE stop Bamberg). From the station, it is about a 15-minute walk to the Old Town and Gardeners' Town.
The procession is open to the public, and attendance is free. The Pontifical Mass on the Cathedral Square begins at 8 a.m. Road closures are to be expected in the city center.
The Gardeners' Town around Mittelstraße is particularly festively decorated and offers the most authentic atmosphere.
