20th Capital City Triathlon in Treptower Park for all distances
The Berlin Triathlon celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026. What began in 2007 as a compact format for the Berlin triathlon scene has become a mass sporting event today: over 1700 registered participants, five distances, two competition days. The venue has been Treptower Park in the Alt-Treptow district (Treptow-Köpenick borough) for years – with the swimming course on the Spree around the Insel der Jugend, the cycling course through the Plänterwald, and the running course along the Spree banks.
The Berlin Triathlon is deliberately broad: from a 400-meter swim for fitness enthusiasts to the middle distance with 1.9 km swimming, 88 km cycling, and 19 km running for ambitious triathletes. In between are the sprint distance (750m/22km/4.5km), Olympic distance (1.5km/36km/9km), and the children's triathlon, which sells out months in advance. The latter is an indicator: the Berlin Triathlon is increasingly seen as a family event.
The swimming course takes place in the Spree around the Insel der Jugend – a historic island park between Treptower Park and Plänterwald. The cycling course leads through Plänterwald, a forest park with quiet roads, making the competitions run smoothly despite the city center location. The running course along the Spree banks is flat and fast. This combination makes the Berlin Triathlon a fast triathlon – personal bests are possible.
Unlike many other triathlons held in cordoned-off industrial areas, the Berlin Triathlon invites spectators. The Insel der Jugend, Treptower Park, and the bridges over the Spree are explicitly open as viewing points. Families and companions sit on picnic blankets on the bank, applaud at the transition zone, and fill the course with atmosphere. The DTU start pass is only required for individual starts in the Olympic and middle distances – relays and shorter distances can be entered with a day license.
The anniversary year continues the established format. Swimming in the Spree around the Insel der Jugend, cycling through the Plänterwald, running along the Spree banks. The children's triathlon was already fully booked at the time of research – an indicator of the family character the event has gained over the years.
Spectating is possible free of charge everywhere along the course. The transition zone, the bridges to the Insel der Jugend, and the Spree bank near Plänterwald offer the best viewing points. Companions can settle in for a picnic atmosphere over the weekend – the Treptower Park is large enough not to mix the flow of athletes and spectators.
