Africa as a Guest in Treptower Park
Treptower Park, one of Berlin's oldest public parks, has been the venue for a series of open-air festivals organized by Hauptstadtkultur Berlin (Jüttner Entertainment) at the Rosengarten parking lot for several years: from street food festivals to circus weekends and thematic cultural festivals. The International Afrika Festival is one of the newer formats in this series, using the weekend of August 14th to 16th, 2026, to bring African music, dance, and gastronomy to the Treptow-Köpenick district.
What's on Offer
On the main stage, various African and Afro-German artists will perform over the three festival days: from live bands and dance groups to DJ sets featuring Afrobeats, Soukous, Highlife, and Amapiano. Around the stage, a marketplace unfolds: stalls offer drumming workshops, henna painting, African clothing, jewelry, and wood carvings. The food ranges from Senegalese Yassa to Ethiopian Injera bread and South African Braai barbecue. There's a dedicated children's program with a storytelling tent and craft stations for families.
Location and Atmosphere
The Rosengarten parking lot is located directly on Puschkinallee, opposite the Soviet War Memorial and just a few minutes' walk from the Spree riverbank and Plänterwald harbor. Its location in the Alt-Treptow district (Treptow-Köpenick borough) makes the festival a perfect park weekend: many visitors combine their visit with a stroll along the Spree, a visit to the neighboring Plänterwald, or a boat trip on the Spree.
A Growing Festival Scene for the African Diaspora
Berlin hosts one of Central Europe's most vibrant African diaspora communities: according to the Senate Department, around 30,000 people with roots in Sub-Saharan Africa live in the capital, plus a comparable number from the Maghreb. This community is reflected in a small but growing festival landscape: from the KeNaKo Afrika Festival at the main station to the African Book Festival and the open-air weekends held in Treptower Park. The International Afrika Festival positions itself as a family-friendly summer event with a low barrier to entry.
