Berlin's contribution to the European Neighbourhood Week – Neighbourhood festival at the WALDI community centre in Plänterwald
Neighbourhood Day is celebrated annually at the end of May in over 30 European countries. In Berlin, it is coordinated by the Association for Socio-Cultural Work e. V. (VskA). Community centres, neighbourhood clubs, and associations organise open courtyard festivals, street parties, and get-together events on this day. The Plänterwald Kiezfest is one of these decentralised offerings – anchored at the Plänterwald community centre, WALDI for short.
On Friday, May 29, 2026, the Plänterwald community centre at Galileistraße 31, 12435 Berlin, will open its doors to the neighbourhood. The festival is part of the Neighbourhood Week 2026 (May 25–31) – a Berlin action week featuring over 100 neighbourhood festivals in all districts.
The district of Plänterwald is located in the Treptow-Köpenick district, between Treptower Park, the former Spreepark, and the Spree River. Characterised by prefabricated housing estates and small cooperative settlements, it is one of Berlin's quieter residential areas. The WALDI community centre on Galileistraße is an important meeting point for the neighbourhood: advice, social interaction, cultural offerings, social infrastructure.
The Plänterwald community centre (WALDI) is run by the Association for Socio-Cultural Work e. V. (VskA). It offers year-round advisory services, social events, creative and educational programmes for the local residents. The Kiezfest on Neighbourhood Day is one of the annual highlights.
