Whit Monday May 25, 2026 at the Unterer Eisenhammer Exten in Rinteln: Blacksmith demonstrations, acrobatics, horse-drawn carriage, and living industrial history
Since 1994, around 1,100 wind, water, and industrial mills nationwide have opened their doors on Whit Monday for the German Mill Day — coordinated by the German Society for Mill Science and Preservation. In the Weserbergland, the Unterer Eisenhammer in Rinteln-Exten is a traditional meeting point. Here, the water of the Exter river is used as an energy source: a historic water wheel drives heavy hammers, which were once used to forge tools, scythes, and agricultural equipment.
The highlight is the demonstration of the historic forge in action. Volunteer blacksmiths from the association show how iron becomes red-hot in the hearth and is shaped under the heavy trip hammers. In addition, craftsmen demonstrate the forging of nails, horseshoes, and tools on their own anvils. Children can also try their hand at hammering under supervision.
Between the technical demonstrations, acrobatic acts provide entertainment. On the outdoor grounds, stalls offer hand-forged tools, regional specialties, and snacks. Coffee and cake are served in the museum café, while hearty dishes come from the outdoor kitchen.
A special feature is the historic horse-drawn carriage shuttle service between the Eisenhammer and the nearby Mill Museum. This allows both Mill Day locations to be visited in one day — with a relaxing ride through the hilly landscape of the Schaumburg region. Families with children can experience a touch of the pre-industrial era.
Admission to the Eisenhammer is traditionally free on Mill Day. Donations for the preservation of the monument are gratefully accepted. Parking is limited at the museum; arrival by bicycle via the Exter-Route is recommended.
Whit Monday traditionally brings a particularly large number of visitors to the small museum grounds. The historic forge operates all day, powered by the water from the Exter river. Between demonstrations, market stalls, an outdoor kitchen, and the horse-drawn carriage shuttle are set up on the outdoor grounds.
The program follows the proven structure of previous years:
The exact program for 2026 will be published a few weeks before the event on the website of Mühlenland Niedersachsen.
