Waldbreitbach Kirmes with the legendary fireworks display 'Wied in Flammen' on the Wied riverbank
Waldbreitbach is known regionally as a Marian pilgrimage site, a monastery location, and a starting point for hikes in the Wieder Land. In summer, the village becomes the scene of one of the region's largest folk festivals once a year — the Waldbreitbach Kirmes with the highlight 'Wied in Flammen'.
The Kirmes spans six days. Classic program elements include: Thursday, the traditional 'tree fetching' by the Junggesellenclub, a festival tent with live music on the main evenings, a parish service and morning pint on Sunday, and live music on Monday as a second highlight after the fireworks. Carousels, amusement rides, and food stalls occupy the festival grounds.
The hallmark of the Kirmes is the music fireworks display on Saturday, August 15th at 10 PM. A category F4 grand fireworks display will be fired on the Wied riverbank — the highest class, executed by professional pyrotechnicians. Choreographed to music, the fireworks illuminate the Wied Valley in colorful light and create reflections on the water. Proven viewing spots along the Wied fill up hours in advance. In the fireworks community, 'Wied in Flammen' is considered one of the benchmark pyrotechnic performances in western Germany.
The organizer is the Junggesellenclub 'Gemütlichkeit' Waldbreitbach e.V. — a traditional customs club that organizes the Kirmes with volunteer commitment, its own structures, and many years of experience.
On the main evenings — especially on Saturday — high visitor numbers are expected. Early arrival and park-and-ride are recommended.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Junggesellenclub in the summer of 2026. The fireworks display has been one of the most discussed pyrotechnic performances in western Germany for years.
