About Michelskerb

The Michelskerb in Wemmetsweiler is the traditional patronal fair of St. Archangel Michael. A long weekend at the end of September transforms the Bahmert sports field into a festival ground with beer tents, amusement rides, a large fire show, and the typical Saarlandic Gefülltes-Essen (stuffed dumplings) on Kerb Monday.

Patronal Fair in the Köllertal Valley

When the days get shorter at the end of September, Wemmetsweiler, a district of the municipality of Merchweiler in the Neunkirchen district, celebrates its Michelskerb. The patron saint is St. Archangel Michael, to whom the local parish church is dedicated — a patronage that, even today, brings the entire village together in this predominantly Catholic region of Saarland.

From High Mass to Kerb Festivities

The event kicks off on Saturday evening with a festive high mass at 5 p.m. in the St. Michael Church, followed by a procession with the local brass band to the festival grounds at the Bahmert sports field. Traditional march music will be played, the marksmen's guild will perform a gun salute, and the mayor will tap the first keg. This officially opens the Kerb.

Grand Fire Show on Sunday Evening

The highlight of the Michelskerb is the grand fire show with fireworks on Sunday evening at 8 p.m. Inspired by the success of the Junikerb in Merchweiler, the professional fire show has become a firm fixture of the Wemmetsweiler Kerb — attracting visitors from the entire Neunkirchen district and the Saarbrücken regional association.

Gefülltes-Essen on Kerb Monday

A typical Saarlandic experience awaits on Kerb Monday: Starting at noon, the traditional Gefülltes-Essen (stuffed dumplings with bacon sauce) will be served at the Gasthaus Kleer-Altenhofen — one of the most characteristic dishes of Saarlandic cuisine. Vegetarian options are also available. Reservations are highly recommended.

Children Participate

A lovely tradition: Every year, the children from the local primary school participate in an art competition, and the winning designs are featured on the official Michelskerb festival posters. This gesture underscores the close connection between the festival, school life, and the village community.

Michelskerb — edition 2026

The Michelskerb 2026 is expected to take place on the third weekend of September. Patronal mass with procession on Saturday, festival activities, grand fire show on Sunday evening, and traditional Gefülltes-Essen on Kerb Monday.

The 2026 edition is expected to take place on the third weekend of September (September 19–21) — the exact date will be confirmed by the municipality of Merchweiler during the summer months.

The venue, as every year, will be the Bahmert sports field in Wemmetsweiler, with the festival mass held in St. Michael's Church.
