Karlsruhe's Winter Highlight at Schlossplatz

For several years, the Stadtwerke Karlsruhe WINTERZEIT has been Karlsruhe's premier winter event. In 2026/2027, the season runs from Monday, November 23, 2026, to Sunday, January 24, 2027 — nearly nine weeks of ice skating, curling, and hospitality right in front of Karlsruhe Palace. Stadtwerke Karlsruhe, the organizer and main sponsor, provides free access to the area, with ice skate rental and food services offered at exhibitor prices.

Large Ice Rink with a Circular Path

The centerpiece is the large ice rink with a romantic circular path: a central ice surface for free skating, plus a separate circuit under winter-lit trees — perfect for families, couples, and groups of friends. You can leisurely skate along the circuit, enjoying views of the illuminated palace and Karlsruhe's skyline. The ice rink is maintained daily and optimized according to weather conditions.

Seven Curling Rinks

A special feature of the Karlsruhe Winterzeit is the seven curling rinks (Eisstockschießen): Teams can compete here, with or without instruction. Corporate events, birthdays, and sports clubs often book the rinks in advance — an unusual and atmospheric alternative to standard ice skating. The rinks are equipped with high-quality technology, professional stones, and kicker markings.

Winter Village with a Fireplace

Surrounding the ice rink is the cozy winter village: heated pavilions with fireplaces, food stalls offering warm meals, mulled wine, hot drinks, and snacks. Those needing a break from the ice can warm up here with a view of the rink. The winter village is atmospherically decorated with winter themes, fairy lights, and illumination — perfect for photos and relaxed moments between skating sessions.

100% Green Electricity from Hydropower

An important aspect: The ice rink is powered by 100% certified green electricity from hydropower — OK-Power and TÜV Nord certificates. This is part of the program: Stadtwerke Karlsruhe explicitly positions its Winterzeit as a sustainable ice rink, fully compensating for its energy needs. This makes the Karlsruhe Winterzeit one of the greenest ice rinks in Germany.

Karlsruhe Palace as a Backdrop

The unique backdrop is the Karlsruhe Palace — a Baroque palace built in 1715, from which the fan-shaped city of Karlsruhe radiates symmetrically southward. The palace now houses the Badisches Landesmuseum. In winter, it is illuminated at night, allowing ice rink visitors to skate under a breathtaking light display. Its location directly in the city center makes the Winterzeit a perfect program for weekend trips to Karlsruhe — often combined with a visit to the Karlsruhe Christmas Market nearby.

Karlsruhe — The Fan City at the Entrance to the Black Forest

Karlsruhe (approx. 308,000 inhabitants, a city district and independent city) is the second-largest city in Baden-Württemberg and home to the Federal Court of Justice and the Federal Constitutional Court. The city is famous as the Fan City: 32 streets and avenues radiate star-shaped from the palace in all directions. The Winterzeit at Schlossplatz is one of the central seasonal cultural events — right in the heart of the fan.

Karlsruhe Winterzeit — edition 2026

From 23.11.2026 to 24.01.2027, the Stadtwerke Karlsruhe WINTERZEIT takes place at Schlossplatz: a large ice rink with a romantic circular path, seven curling rinks, and a winter village with a fireplace. The ice rink is powered by 100% green electricity from hydropower. Admission to the area is free; skate rental and curling are subject to a fee.

2026/2027 Season in front of Karlsruhe Palace

Nearly nine weeks of ice fun in the heart of Karlsruhe: Stadtwerke opens its Winterzeit facility on November 23, 2026, and closes it on January 24, 2027. The ice rink, curling rinks, and the heated winter village with a fireplace are in operation daily during this period.

Highlight 2026/2027: 100% green electricity from certified hydropower, plus an expanded curling offer for groups and clubs. Weekend programs with ice shows, DJ sets, and school holiday activities are expected based on previous years — current dates on the event page.
