Hamburg's most sustainable run
The MidSummerRun is not just another fun run in the Hanseatic city – it is Hamburg's first sustainability run. Since 2022, Lauftreff Alstertal e.V. has been organizing the event at Torhaus Wellingsbüttel with the aim of aligning all organizational decisions with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals – from marking the course with ecological chalk to organic catering at the finish.
Courses
Three competitions are on the program: 5 km run (start 6:25 PM), 10 km run (start 6:15 PM), and the children's run of about 970 m (start 5:30 PM). The start and finish are at Torhaus Wellingsbüttel – a listed Baroque palace from the 18th century. The course leads through Hamburg's northernmost district, through park-like residential areas and Alster meadows.
Sustainability at every level
The concept is consistent: medals made from sustainable materials with on-site date branding, ecological chalk on the course, organic products from regional partners (Bahde, Feldmann) at the finish, course marking according to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The MidSummerRun took 2nd place at the Hanse Environmental Award 2025.
Wellingsbüttel and the Alster Valley
Wellingsbüttel is located in the Wandsbek district, in the north of Hamburg, nestled in the Alster Valley. With its forest villages and Alster meadows, the region is one of Hamburg's greenest areas. The Torhaus Wellingsbüttel was once part of a manor house and today forms the striking ensemble at Wellingsbüttler Weg 75.
