35 Years of Volkslauf in the Alstertal

What began in 1991 as a small initiative by Lauftreff Alstertal is now one of Hamburg's most important fun runs. The Volkslauf through the beautiful Alstertal celebrates its 35th edition in 2026. The route, which leads through the Alster valley in Hamburg's Wandsbek district, is considered by Hamburg runners to be one of the most scenic – it also ranks among the most beautiful half marathon routes in Germany.

A Route That Lives Up to Its Name

"Through the beautiful Alstertal" is more than just marketing. The half marathon route leads through Teetzpark, past the historic Torhaus Wellingsbüttel (one of the few surviving precursors to a noble house in northern Hamburg), the Poppenbüttel lock on the Oberalster, and through Hennebergpark. Paved paths alternate with gravel paths in the park. The course is predominantly flat – ideal for personal bests and for beginners alike.

Distances for Everyone

• Half Marathon (21.1 km): the premier distance, three laps of 7.1 km each
• 10 km: for ambitious runners, one lap
• 4 km: for beginners and intermediates
• 1.5 km Beginner Run: first race experience
• 400 m Children's Run: for the youngest participants

Part of the Hamburg Running Cup

The Volkslauf Alstertal is part of the Hamburg Running Cup, a competition comprising several Hamburg fun runs throughout the year. Those who complete multiple Cup races collect points for an overall ranking. As a result, the Volkslauf Alstertal attracts runners from all over the Hamburg region every year – from the Wandsbek district itself, but also from Altona, Eimsbüttel, and the metropolitan region.

Organizer: A Traditional Club

The organizer is Lauftreff Alstertal e.V., which has been organizing running training in the Alstertal for decades. The club relies on dedicated volunteers and offers weekly running training for all levels. The annual fun run is the main event of the club's year. Start and finish are at the club house at Wellingsbüttler Weg 43a in the Wellingsbüttel district.
