Whitsun fair on Poppenbüttler Markt – carousels, stalls, and a classic family outing in northern Wandsbek
Poppenbüttel is located in the north of the Wandsbek district, at the transition between the dense Hamburg suburbs and the Sasel-Volksdorf-Alstertal region. The district is characterized by single-family homes, old trees, the Alster hiking trail, and the Alster spring it is named after. In the middle lies the Poppenbüttler Markt – a central square used for the weekly market and for the annual district markets (Pfingstmarkt, Sommerfest).
The Poppenbüttler Pfingstmarkt features classic fairground elements, focusing on families and children. Children's carousel, dodgems, shooting gallery, pony carousel, small stalls for gingerbread hearts, cotton candy, almond brittle, a mini Ferris wheel, a 'Hau den Lukas' (strongman game). The atmosphere is deliberately kept small – the area is manageable, the paths are short, the concept is aimed at parents with young children and schoolchildren from the district and northern Wandsbek.
Whitsun – which is one of the reliably long weekends in Hamburg (Whit Monday is a public holiday) – has been the market's date for generations. The Whitsun anchor makes the market a regular family outing destination for Hamburg residents from neighboring districts (Alstertal, Bramfeld, Volksdorf) as well.
In the Wandsbek district, Poppenbüttel has two central market dates per year: the Pfingstmarkt in May and the Poppenbüttler Sommerfest in September. Both are organized by WAGS Hamburg, are free to access, and use the Poppenbüttler Markt as the festival grounds. In Hamburg's district market calendar, both fit into the series of Wandsbek and North Hamburg district markets.
The 2026 edition takes advantage of the late Whitsun weekend (May 23rd–25th). Three market days cover the early summer kickoff at Poppenbüttler Markt. As usual, the rides gather around the central square, supplemented by stall areas for food and sweets. Setup begins on the Thursday and Friday of Whitsun week.
Over the three days, the market attracts families from Poppenbüttel and the surrounding districts of Sasel, Volksdorf, Bergstedt, and Bramfeld. Whit Monday, being a public holiday, is usually the busiest day of the three.
