Four days of medieval life at Creuzburg Castle in the Wartburg district — for around 30 years
For around 30 years, the Burgfest Creuzburg has been the largest medieval festival in the Wartburg district. The venue is the historic Creuzburg Castle high above the Werra river — one of Thuringia's few completely preserved castles. For four days, the castle courtyard fills with market stalls, camp life, knight fights, music, and a festival parade that leads through the old town of Amt Creuzburg. The organizer is the Burgverein Creuzburg e.V., which has been organizing the maintenance and revitalization of the castle for decades.
The program follows the dramaturgy of a classic medieval market: market stalls with crafts, leather goods, jewelry, mead, and medieval cuisine, camp groups depicting life in the 12th–15th centuries, demonstrations by archers, blacksmiths, and falconers. On stage, medieval bands like Saltatio Draconum, acrobatic duos like TimeLena, theater groups, and fire artists alternate. The knight group Herold demonstrates show fights and sword techniques.
Highlights include the festival parade through the old town and the evening fire show, when the castle, illuminated by torches, unfolds a special atmosphere. Theater performances like "The Adventures of Don Quixote" invite visitors to linger in the evening.
Creuzburg Castle is located in the Wartburg district in the state of Thuringia, about 10 kilometers west of Eisenach. The town of Amt Creuzburg has been a rural municipality since 2019, formed by the merger of Creuzburg, Mihla, and Ebenshausen. Those arriving at the castle can easily combine the visit with the nearby Wartburg Castle in Eisenach (UNESCO World Heritage site), a hike on the heights of the Werra Valley, or a short visit to the district town of Eisenach.
The 2026 Burgfest takes place from Friday, May 22nd to Monday, May 25th, 2026, at Creuzburg Castle. The organizer is the Burgverein Creuzburg e.V. For four days, the castle opens its gates to medieval enthusiasts, families, and costumed visitors from all over Thuringia and beyond.
Performers on stage include the medieval folk band Saltatio Draconum, the acrobatic duo TimeLena, and the knight group Herold with sword technique demonstrations. The program is complemented by juggling, market performances, theater groups, and fire shows. A special theater production: "The Adventures of Don Quixote".
