Traditional district fair in Göttingen's Grone district — parade, lantern and torch procession, and shooting by the Grone 09 shooting club
Grone is one of Göttingen's largest districts and is located west of the university city. With around 16,000 inhabitants, Grone forms its own world within Göttingen, with its own history, its own clubs, and its own festival traditions. The Groner Kirmes is the most important district event of the year and a date when long-time residents, newcomers, and guests from all over the city come together.
Behind the organization of the Kirmes is the association Wir für Grone e.V., which promotes district life and organizes several events a year. In close cooperation with the Schützenverein Grone 09 e.V. and other local clubs, a festival program is created that builds on long-standing traditions while also setting new accents.
A traditional highlight of the Groner Kirmes is the lantern and torch procession, which winds its way through the district after dusk. Children and families particularly look forward to this custom, which creates a special atmosphere and is deeply rooted in the history of the Kirmes.
The traditional shooting by the Schützenverein Grone 09 e.V. is another integral part of the Kirmes. Here, the club's kingly title is shot for, which is traditionally associated with festive ceremonies, a parade, and communal meals.
The Kirmes itself offers what one expects from a good district fair: stalls with sweets, toys, and games of chance, gastronomic offerings, stages with live music, and a diverse program for children, teenagers, and adults.
For generations, the Groner Kirmes has been the most important district event in western Göttingen. The organizer Wir für Grone e.V. works closely with the Schützenverein Grone 09 e.V., the district council, and numerous local clubs to offer a varied program over several festival days.
