Traditional procession for St. Martin's Day through Delmenhorst city centre – with brass bands and fire show
Carrying glowing lanterns in autumn dates back to the veneration of Saint Martin of Tours, who, according to legend, shared his cloak with a beggar. Over time, the religious occasion has evolved into a beloved family festival celebrated in many German cities as a lantern procession. Delmenhorst upholds this tradition with a large, communal parade that extends far beyond church boundaries.
The procession begins at Rathausplatz, the city's central square. Parents, grandparents, and children with homemade or purchased lanterns gather in the late afternoon and set off together. The atmosphere is warm and communal, with many families knowing each other and new acquaintances being made.
Several brass bands accompany the procession musically. Their drums and pipes set the rhythm, and traditional St. Martin's songs are sung together. Classics like "Ich geh mit meiner Laterne" (I walk with my lantern) echo through the evening streets.
Before or after the procession, children can have their faces painted – an additional highlight for the youngest attendees. The concluding fire show provides a visual climax: a professional group of fire artists presents a choreographed performance with torches, fire staffs, and pyrotechnic effects.
The organisers are DWFG (Delmenhorster Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft) and Volksbank eG Oldenburg-Land Delmenhorst, who have jointly supported the festival for years. The Volksbank's involvement demonstrates the cooperative bank's social commitment to preserving and promoting local traditions.
Admission is free, and participation is welcome. Anyone wishing to join simply needs to bring their lantern (and possibly a spare candle or battery for LED lanterns).
The 2026 edition continues the popular family format. At a time when digital media often dominates children's attention, the lantern procession offers an analogue, communal experience that connects generations.
Parents and grandparents recall their own lantern festivals from childhood, while the little ones experience this special atmosphere for the first time.
