Thanksgiving in Lauterbach — Tradition in the Wartburgkreis

Thanksgiving (Erntedank) is one of the oldest Christian festivals — and in the rural Wartburgkreis district in the state of Thuringia, it is still celebrated with particular devotion today. The small village of Lauterbach, part of the Hainich-Werratal administrative community, celebrates the festival every year at the end of September with a festively decorated church service in the Protestant village church and a subsequent celebration with the village community.

The Decorated Thanksgiving Altar

In the run-up, farmers, gardeners, and housewives from Lauterbach and the surrounding farms set up the Thanksgiving altar in the church. Grain, fruit, vegetables, bread, wine, and honey are arranged into a traditional Thanksgiving display — an expression of gratitude for the year's harvest. The altar remains in the church throughout the festival day and the following week, attracting visitors from neighboring communities.

The Werra Valley Landscape

Lauterbach is located in the south of the Wartburgkreis district on the Werra river, nestled in a gentle low mountain landscape between Hainich and Rhön. The region is characterized by agriculture; Thanksgiving has a real, not just symbolic, meaning here. The festival combines church service with social village life — coffee, cake, and hearty food are part of it.
