Two Centuries of Harzungen Fire Brigade

Harzungen is now a district of the municipality of Harztor — formed from the merger of several villages in the South Harz region in the Nordhausen district. The Harzungen Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded in 1826, marking 200 years of voluntary fire protection in 2026 — one of the oldest fire brigade anniversaries in northern Thuringia.

Program Day on July 4, 2026

The day is designed as a classic village and fire brigade festival with competitions in the morning and a family program in the afternoon:

• From 11:00 AM — Youth fire brigade competitions for various age groups, teamwork, skill, fire brigade technical exercises
• From 2:00 PM — Family program opens: bouncy castle, games, hands-on activities for children and adults
• In the evening — Festival finale with music, food, and drinks at the festival grounds

Harzungen on the South Harz

The district is located on the southern edge of the Harz mountains, about 15 km northwest of Nordhausen. The municipality of Harztor was formed in 2010 from the merger of several villages — Harzungen retained its own fire brigade as a focal point of community identity. The 2026 anniversary is an occasion for the whole village to come together.
