Walpurgis in the South Harz
On the night before May 1st, all of Germany celebrates Walpurgis — but in the Harz, the festival has a special depth. The legend of the witches' dance on the Brocken, the highest peak of the Harz, has shaped regional identity since Goethe's "Faust." The municipality of Harztor, with its districts Neustadt, Ilfeld, Niedersachswerfen, and Buchholz, is located directly at the southern foot of the Harz and uses this location for a grand Walpurgis festival on the Neustadt barbecue area. The festival is family-friendly, locally rooted, and at the same time large enough to attract guests from all over the North Thuringian region.
Live Music, Laser Show, and Witch Dance
The program for Walpurgisnacht Harztor combines classic Walpurgis folklore with a modern open-air party atmosphere. The Bartlos Partyband brings rocking live music to the stage, while Kevin Neon with Band delivers modern pop and catchy hits. Between the live sets, traditional witch and devil dances take place — costumed performance groups that parade across the festival grounds in colorful witch costumes. As darkness falls, the highlight unfolds: a spectacular laser show conjures mystical beams of light into the night sky.
Also for Families — Children's Party from 7 PM
So that families can experience the festival together, OCV e.V. organizes its own children's party starting at 7 PM. Young witches and devils can dance in costume, get their faces painted, and participate in small interactive activities. Children up to 13 years of age have free admission — a clear signal that the festival appeals not only to adults.
Culinary Supporting Program
The Catering-Partyküche serves drinks to the guests; at the barbecue stand of the Harzklub e.V., Thuringian specialties are the focus — Bratwurst, Roster, steaks, and vegetarian alternatives. The festival grounds offer ample outdoor seating.
