Muhr am See – Kerwa in the Franconian Lake District
The municipality of Muhr am See is located directly on the northern shore of the Altmühlsee, one of Bavaria's largest artificial lakes and the heart of the Franconian Lake District. With around 1,700 inhabitants, Muhr is a rather small municipality, but it is touristically significant: camping, water sports, bird island, and cycling paths around the lake attract tens of thousands of visitors every year. The municipality consists of the districts of Altenmuhr (administrative seat) and Neuenmuhr – Altenmuhr is the venue for the annual Kirchweih.
Kirchweih in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen District
The Franconian Kirchweih (Kerwa) has a particularly dense tradition in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district: numerous villages and districts celebrate their Kerwa as the most important festival date of the year. The Muhr Kerwa is one of the 10 Kirchweihen in the district documented annually on fraenkische-kirchweih.de, alongside Kerwas in Gersdorf, Kaltenbuch, Bubenheim, Stirn, and Nennslingen.
Festival Grounds Directly at the Town Hall
The special charm of the Muhr Kerwa lies in its location: the festival tent is set up directly in front of the Altenmuhr Town Hall on the village square. This means the Kerwa takes place not on a remote festival site, but in the middle of the village – every step through Altenmuhr leads through the festival activities during the Kerwa days.
Four Days of Kerwa Program
Like all Franconian Kirchweihen, the Muhr Kerwa follows a well-established four-day rhythm from Friday to Monday:
- Friday: Festival opening with beer tapping and live band in the festival tent.
- Saturday: Main festival evening with brass and dance music. On many Franconian Kerwas, this is also the day for the "tree raising" by the village youth.
- Sunday: Festival service, morning pint with a brass band, lunch, in the afternoon a Kerwa parade of local clubs. Dance music in the evening.
- Monday: Closing event with music and children's afternoon.
The exact band lineup and day-by-day program will be announced by the municipality of Muhr am See and local clubs.
Combine with the Franconian Lake District
Anyone visiting the Kerwa at the end of July can ideally combine their stay with a summer holiday on the Altmühlsee: boat trips, bird island observation, lido, surfing, cycling tours around the lake. The combination of nature tourism and village Kerwa makes the event charming.
