In most German regions, the Maypole is erected on April 30th or May 1st. Borkum has developed its own tradition here: The Maypole is only erected on Whit-Saturday. This peculiarity is maintained and is part of what distinguishes Borkum as an island from many coastal holiday resorts.

Borkumer Jungens and Folk Dance Group

The tradition is upheld by the Borkumer Jungens — an association of the island's young men who have been preserving the island's maritime and folk traditions for decades. Together with the Borkum Folk Dance Group and the local Men's Choir, they erect the Maypole. Frisian dances and shanties accompany the ceremony, making the raising a communal celebration.
