About Maibaum Borkum

Unlike in most regions of Germany, the Maibaum-Aufstellen (Maypole Raising) on Borkum does not take place on May 1st, but on Whit-Saturday. This insular peculiarity dates back to the island's tradition and has been maintained for generations by the Borkumer Jungens (Borkum Young Men) together with the Borkum Folk Dance Group and the Men's Choir. The raising is accompanied by Frisian dances, shanties, and communal festival culture — a unique traditional experience with a maritime character.

An Insular Exception in German May Traditions

In most German regions, the Maypole is erected on April 30th or May 1st. Borkum has developed its own tradition here: The Maypole is only erected on Whit-Saturday. This peculiarity is maintained and is part of what distinguishes Borkum as an island from many coastal holiday resorts.

Borkumer Jungens and Folk Dance Group

The tradition is upheld by the Borkumer Jungens — an association of the island's young men who have been preserving the island's maritime and folk traditions for decades. Together with the Borkum Folk Dance Group and the local Men's Choir, they erect the Maypole. Frisian dances and shanties accompany the ceremony, making the raising a communal celebration.

Tradition and Island Identity

On Borkum, the Maibaum-Aufstellen is not just a custom, but an expression of island identity. The traditional costume, the Low German songs, the history of whaling, and the maritime heritage are closely interwoven. Those who want to get to know Borkum beyond a classic beach holiday will find an authentic insight in the Maibaum-Aufstellen.

Whitsun Weekend on Borkum

The Maibaum-Aufstellen is embedded in Borkum's Whitsun program 2026 — along with the Borkum Jazz Days and other activities. Whitsun is a very busy travel time on Borkum; early booking of ferries and accommodation is recommended.

Maibaum Borkum — edition 2026

On Whit-Saturday, May 23, 2026, the Borkumer Jungens, together with the Borkum Folk Dance Group and the Men's Choir, will raise the island's Maypole. Frisian dances and shanties will accompany the ceremony. Free admission.

The Maibaum-Aufstellen 2026 follows the island tradition of raising the Maypole on Whit-Saturday and not on May 1st. The exact time and location will be communicated by the organizer in advance.
