Nostalgic Folk Festival in the Three-River City
The Oide Dult Passau is a special piece of Lower Bavarian festival culture: a nostalgic folk festival that consciously sets itself apart from modern folk festivals with disco lighting and oversized rides. In the picturesque Klostergarten (monastery garden) directly on the banks of the Inn in the city of Passau, traditional folk festival customs find a new, carefully staged home. 2026 marks the 8th edition of the event.
Brass Band Music Without Amplification
A special feature is the acoustic brass band music without amplification. Where modern folk festivals use loudspeaker systems, the Oide Dult deliberately relies on the original sound of trumpets, trombones, tubas, and clarinets without electronic amplification. This return to basics creates a special atmosphere: guests hear the music in its natural timbre and can converse relaxedly in the tent.
The Passau Pemperlprater from 1829
The true highlight of the event is the Passau Pemperlprater – a hand-carved carousel from 1829, one of the oldest surviving folk festival attractions in Bavaria. With elaborately painted wooden horses, intricate carvings, and mechanical drive, the carousel embodies the folk festival culture of the 19th century. Families with children and folklore enthusiasts alike love the Pemperlprater as a living piece of cultural history.
Ox Roast, Grilled Fish, and Swing Boat
Culinary and atmospheric, the Oide Dult follows tradition: ox roast cooked over an open fire, Steckerlfisch (fish grilled on a stick) straight from the grill, snack platters with Bavarian cheese and bacon, accompanied by beer from the traditional Passau Löwen-Brauerei. An antique swing boat complements the range of rides and connects adults with childhood memories.
Passau – The Three-River City
Passau is located in the extreme southeast of Bavaria at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers and, as the Dreiflüssestadt (three-river city), is one of Germany's most beautiful urban ensembles. With around 53,000 inhabitants, the independent city forms the cultural and economic center of Lower Bavaria on the border with Austria and the Czech Republic. The monastery garden in the old town offers an idyllic festival setting with historic architecture and water views.
Festival Tent and Festival Operations
The festival tent of the Oide Dult seats around 600 guests – significantly smaller than a classic folk festival tent, making it much more family-friendly. Opening hours are daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., until 10 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free. Families are particularly welcome: children pay reduced prices for carousel rides, and the entire festival grounds in the monastery garden are car-free and easily manageable.
