One night, many sounds: music festival in the historic old town of Passau
The Passau Night of Music is one of the most popular cultural events in the Lower Bavarian city of Passau in the district of the same name. On a Saturday evening in May, the baroque old town between the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers transforms into a single large stage landscape. Bands, choirs, ensembles, and solo artists perform at about ten venues – from Residenzplatz and the Rathausinnenhof to the Niedernburg Church –.
The program spans a wide range: »From classical to rock, from jazz to pop, including folk and world music«. Visitors can choose between the city band, singer-songwriters, rock-meets-brass-band formations, and hip-hop or reggae acts. The Passau Concert Association contributes classical pieces in historic church spaces, while the youth center, ScharfrichterHaus, and the Municipal Music School host other stages.
Admission is via the festival wristband, which allows access to all venues. Since extensive road closures make the old town car-free from 6 p.m. for safety reasons, the Night of Music becomes a relaxed city experience: you stroll through narrow alleys, discover hidden courtyards, and let yourself be guided from one sound to the next.
Organized by the City of Passau in collaboration with numerous cultural partners, the Night of Music is much more than a concert evening. It is a communal city festival that appeals to the citizens of Passau as well as guests from all of Lower Bavaria and neighboring Austria.
For the eighth edition, the City of Passau invites you to the Night of Music in the historic old town on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 7 p.m. The official opening will take place at 7 p.m. at Residenzplatz; individual venues will start with music earlier.
At about ten stages – including Residenzplatz, Rathausinnenhof, Gablergasse, ScharfrichterHaus, Vorplatz Studienkirche, Niedernburg-Kirche, Kulturmodell, Café Museum, as well as the forecourts of Altstadtschule and Lukas-Kern-Kinderheim – numerous acts will perform. On the forecourt of Altstadtschule, the Stadtkapelle Passau (folk and world music) will play from 7 p.m., followed by Baier Buam and Friends (rock meets brass band) at 9 p.m.; on the forecourt of Lukas-Kern-Kinderheim, Saitenstraße (singer-songwriter / pop & rock) can be heard from 7:15 p.m., and Uwe Kaa (hip-hop / reggae) from 9:15 p.m. The Passau Concert Association will contribute a classical piece in the Gothic Nave of Passau-Niedernburg starting at 7:30 p.m. From 6 p.m., the old town will be closed to car traffic.
Access to the venues is via the festival wristband. Exact prices and advance booking points will be announced by the City of Passau or the Tourist Information Office.
Passau is located on the A3 motorway (Munich–Linz) and is easily accessible by train (ICE/EC to Vienna and Munich). It is about a 15-minute walk from the main train station to the old town. From 6 p.m., the old town area is closed to car traffic – arrival by train, bus, or on foot is recommended.
Access to the venues is via the festival wristband, which is available in advance and on the day of the event.
The official opening takes place at 7 p.m.; some stages start a little later. A program flyer helps you find your favorite acts in the extensive old town.
