Advent magic on the Cathedral Square in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral
Every year during Advent, the Passau Christmas Market at the Cathedral transforms the Cathedral Square in the historic old town of the city on three rivers into a festive sea of lights. The city of Passau is a district-free city in the administrative district of Bavaria of the same name, located on the border with Austria. Guests reach the market, which spreads out in front of the mighty west facade of St. Stephen's Cathedral, via winding medieval alleys.
Around 60 sales and delicatessen stalls offer a wide selection: mulled wine, regional and international delicacies, hand-painted Christmas tree decorations, wood carvings, nativity figures, jewelry, knitted items, and handmade pralines. Charitable stalls sell gift items for a good cause, lending the market a social touch.
A special feature of the market is the organ concerts in St. Stephen's Cathedral. Festive sounds echo from the world's largest cathedral organ every Wednesday to Saturday at 12 p.m. during the market season – an acoustic experience that sets the market apart from many others.
With over 20 different events, the Christmas Market invites visitors to linger and offers entertaining hours for young and old. As part of a nativity trail, various nativity scenes – from traditional to contemporary – can be admired, some of them presented to the public for the first time.
During the 2026 Advent season, Cathedral Square in Passau will once again shine in festive Christmas lights. From November 24 to December 22, around 60 sales and food stalls will line up in front of the Baroque facade of St. Stephen's Cathedral.
Mulled wine, roasted almonds, gingerbread, hand-painted Christmas tree decorations, and unique handcrafted items await visitors. The highlight is the organ concerts on the world's largest cathedral organ, which take place every Wednesday to Saturday at 12 p.m., as well as the nativity trail with traditional and contemporary nativity scenes.
Market open daily Nov 24–Dec 22, 2026, Monday to Thursday 10 a.m.–8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.–9 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Organ concerts in St. Stephen's Cathedral every Wednesday to Saturday at 12 p.m. Over 20 accompanying events in the supporting program.
