Hiking, Tasting, Enjoying
The Bühlertäler Weinwandertag is one of the most charming wine events in the Ortenau (Rastatt district, Baden-Württemberg state). It is traditionally held on German Unity Day (October 3rd) by the Bühlertal associations together with local vintners and restaurateurs. The venue is the Ortenauer Weinpfad Engelsberg – an approximately 9-kilometer-long panoramic circular route that leads through the vineyards of Bühlertal.
Start: Tourist-Information Bühlertal
The hike starts from 10 AM at the Tourist-Information Bühlertal (Hauptstraße 92, 77830 Bühlertal). Here you can get your hiking pass and choose your route. The pass costs a symbolic €3, children are free – the entire trail is well-marked and manageable even for inexperienced hikers.
Wine Stations Along the Route
Over the 9 kilometers, several refreshment stations are spread out, where vintners and restaurateurs offer their specialties:
- Affentaler Winzer — Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Pinot Blanc from the neighboring wine village of Affental
- Weinhaus Baden-Baden — wines from Mauerberg, Baden's highest vineyard
- Bühlertäler Wirte — regional dishes such as snack platters, tarte flambée, Maultaschen, and game dishes
- Local Associations — catering with steaks, bratwurst, coffee, and cake
The Ortenauer Weinpfad Engelsberg
The Weinpfad Engelsberg is part of the large Ortenau wine trail network, which extends across the entire Ortenau region. It leads through terraced vineyards on Engelsberg and Mauerberg, past orchards and through small wooded areas. Highlights include several viewpoints with views over the Rhine Valley towards the Vosges and south to the Black Forest. In clear weather, the view extends to French Alsace.
Bühlertal — Wine Village in the Mittelgebirge
Bühlertal (~8,000 inhabitants) is located in the northern Black Forest between Bühl and Sand, at the transition between the vineyard landscape and the hilly terrain. The town is known for the Wagbach lowlands, the Hornisgrinde (highest mountain in the northern Black Forest), and its strong club culture. The wine hike is supported by about a dozen local clubs – a classic Bühlertal community project.
