Traditional Franconian Kirchweih in the market town of Flachslanden
The Kirchweih Flachslanden – simply called Kerwa in the Franconian dialect – is the major social event in the market town of Flachslanden. Every year on the second weekend in August, citizens come together to celebrate one of the region's oldest and liveliest folk festivals for four days. The Kerwa is supported by the local clubs of Flachslanden, who organize the festival on a voluntary basis.
The heart of the Kirchweih is the festival tent in the town center. Traditionally, it kicks off with the beer tapping ceremony, followed by festival evenings with brass band and dance music, the solemn Kirchweih service, the hearty morning pint, and an accompanying Kirchweih market. Sporting events, such as football tournaments organized by local clubs, are also part of the program. The mix of conviviality, music, and lived tradition makes the Franconian Kerwa particularly appealing.
The Kirchweih is more than just a folk festival: it is an expression of village community and Franconian identity. Generations celebrate together, young and old residents of Flachslanden meet in the festival tent, and former residents also return home for the Kerwa. The festival fosters identity and cohesion in the market town of Flachslanden.
