Traditional Kerwa in Franconian Romantic Franconia
Leutershausen is located in the Ansbach district on the Altmühl river, picturesquely situated in Romantic Franconia — a region known for its half-timbered towns, wine and beer culture, and club festivals. The Leutershäuser Kerwa traditionally takes place on the first weekend of September and is one of the town's most important festivals.
The Kerwa begins on Friday evening with the festive Kirchweihfestumzug (Kerwa parade), in which the mayor, town council, shooting clubs, and especially the Kerwaboum and Kerwamadli (Kerwa boys and girls) parade the Kerwa tree through the town center. This is followed by the traditional Bieranstich (beer tapping ceremony) in the festival tent — the official start of the four-day program.
The Leutershäuser Kerwa is supported by a dense network of local clubs: shooting clubs, traditional costume groups, the fire department, and the St. Peter parish are actively involved. Sporting events such as Taekwondo demonstrations complement the classic program. Anyone who wants to experience traditional Franconian Kerwa customs will find themselves in the right place in Leutershausen.
The Kirchweih Leutershausen 2026 will take place on the first weekend of September. Following the classic rhythm, it falls around the first Sunday in September; based on previous years' festivals (2024: Aug 30–Sep 2; 2017: Sep 1–4), it is expected to be September 4–7, 2026. Official confirmation will be provided by the city of Leutershausen via leutershausen.de and frankentourismus.de.
The festival program follows the proven structure of a Middle Franconian Kerwa: parade on Friday with beer tapping and festival band, festival activities on the weekend with Kerwa party and King's Ball, festival service on Sunday, citizens' shooting competition in the afternoon, magic clown show and fireworks on Monday evening.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the city of Leutershausen in due course.
Admission to the festival grounds and market is free. Admission fees may be charged for the Kerwa party in the festival tent and for the King's Ball (price as of 2017, e.g., 3 Euros for the Night Watchman tour). Current prices will be published by the city before the festival begins.
Leutershausen can be reached via the A 7 (Ansbach exit) or the B 13. By train to Ansbach-Hbf and then by bus to Leutershausen.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Admission fees may be charged for the Kerwa party and the King's Ball.
If you want to try the Franconian Schlachtschüssel, you should reserve a seat in the festival tent in good time – the dish is a core part of this Kerwa's identity and is accordingly popular.
