About Salzfest Halle

The Hallesches Salzfest celebrates what has shaped the city for over 1,000 years: the white gold. For three days, the market square, Hallmarkt, and the area in front of the Ulrichskirche transform into a large stage with concerts, a medieval market, salt crafts, and a laser show. In parallel, the Technical Halloren and Saline Museum opens for the Salinefest – with live demonstrations of traditional salt boiling by the Halloren Brotherhood.

Salt Festival in the Saalestadt

The Hallesches Salzfest is one of the largest and oldest city festivals in Saxony-Anhalt. Since 1995, it has been celebrated annually at the end of September, commemorating what Halle (Saale) owes its existence to: the salt springs, which were exploited as early as the Bronze Age and made the city one of the richest in Central Germany during the Middle Ages. For three days, stages, stalls, and historical activities stretch from the Market Square across the Hallmarkt to the Ulrichskirche.

At the center is the Halloren Brotherhood, a community of salt workers who claim medieval privileges and whose typical blue uniforms characterize the city's appearance. They process in procession, demonstrate their working methods, and perform the Bornknechtrenne – a race reminiscent of the medieval brine workers. On Sunday, the Freisprechung der Zimmergesellen (official acceptance of journeymen carpenters) takes place: young craftsmen from all over Germany, in their typical attire, are officially admitted to the guild of journeymen in the market square – a ritual that is still publicly performed in only a few places in Germany.

The program offers a wide range: Pop, rock, and Schlager bands alternate on the stages, complemented by folk and medieval rock. A medieval market with craftsmen, show fights, and mead stalls occupies the area around the Ulrichskirche. On Saturday evening, the grand laser show with pyrotechnics follows – the visual highlight of the festival. For children, there is salt stone hammering, hands-on salt boiling, and a large play area.

Salinefest – the technical counterpart

In parallel, the Technical Halloren and Saline Museum on Mansfelder Straße opens its doors for the Salinefest. On the historic saltworks site, visitors can experience traditional salt boiling in the large pans, alongside an open forge, demonstrations of old trades, and a family program with interactive stations. Those who visit both festivals on the same day get the most complete impression of what makes Halle a salt city.

Halle (Saale) is a district-free city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt and, with around 240,000 inhabitants, the largest city in the state. The Saale river, Burg Giebichenstein castle, the Franckesche Stiftungen, and the Martin Luther University shape the cityscape just as much as the salt history. The Salzfest is considered the most important date in the city's festival calendar – attracting around 200,000 visitors over three days annually.

Salzfest Halle — edition 2026

Three festival days in Halle's old town from September 25th to 27th, 2026. The market square, Hallmarkt, and Ulrichskirche form the festival core, while the Saline Museum opens in parallel for the Salinefest. The 2026 Salzfest will be celebrated over three days throughout Halle's old town. Friday evening opens the festival with the procession of the Halloren Brotherhood and an initial stage program.
