CSD Halle (Saale) — Christopher Street Day & Pride Weeks

Pride in the Handel City

Halle (Saale) is the second-largest city in Saxony-Anhalt and the cultural centre of the state. Here, BBZ lebensart e.V. and AIDS-Hilfe Halle/Sachsen-Anhalt Süd e.V. have been organising Christopher Street Day for years as a visible sign of queer self-determination in the central German region. The market square with the Roter Turm (Red Tower) and the Marktkirche (Market Church) has been the venue for years – not a random location, but the urban heart of the Handel city.

CSD Halle is more than a one-day event: it is embedded in the Pride Weeks, which typically bring Halle's entire queer life into the public sphere for two weeks. Readings, films, discussions, parties, workshops – supported by the city, the queer network, and the youth network Lambda Mitteldeutschland.

Demonstration, Street Festival, Voice

The focus is on the demonstration Saturday: a colourful demonstration winds through the city centre – against discrimination, for diversity and recognition. Afterwards (or in parallel), the street festival takes place on the upper market square, offering a stage programme with music, talks, performances, and queer artists from 11 am to around 9 pm. Information stands from counselling centres, political parties, and self-help organisations will also be present.

Saxony-Anhalt and the Issue of Visibility

Saxony-Anhalt is a state with a rather conservative political majority – which makes the visibility that CSD Halle generates each year all the more important. The Lord Mayor opens the street festival, lending political weight to the occasion. CSD Halle also belongs to the CSD Saxony-Anhalt network, which coordinates the Pride events of the entire state (Magdeburg, Dessau, Halle, smaller cities).
