A night full of music, literature, and magic in the open-air museum
The Franconian Open-Air Museum Bad Windsheim, with over 100 historic buildings and an area of 40 hectares, is one of the largest open-air museums in Germany. Farmhouses, mills, schools, churches, workshops, and entire village ensembles from 800 years of Franconian history have been rebuilt here. It is supported by the district of Middle Franconia. Once a year, this walkable history book transforms into a theatrical stage: the MuseumsNacht.
The MuseumsNacht is an extra-long special opening in the summer, traditionally around the summer solstice. The museum is open from 5:00 PM to 11:59 PM, with long daylight hours and, after dark, illuminated by torchlight and fire. The atmosphere is magical: old farmhouses at sunset, the murmur of a stream at dusk, music emanating from historic rooms.
Approximately 20 musical ensembles and performers entertain across the grounds. The spectrum ranges from swing and medieval music to romantic piano evenings, literary readings, and cabaret performances. The musical opening at 5:00 PM in the Spitalkirche is presented by guitarist and composer Daniel Galindo – a focused, almost meditative start.
The MuseumsNacht is explicitly family-friendly. Children can participate in creative hands-on programs and experience magic with Mosche Karlo (Karlo Reichel) – who has been accompanying the MuseumsNacht for years. Additional magic shows, stilt theater, acrobatics, and walking acts are spread throughout the entire site.
The highlight is the fire juggling performance late in the evening. Afterwards, the Night Watchman leads a procession through the museum with his lantern, singing the Night Watchman's Song – a song passed down through centuries, still remembered in many Franconian villages. This marks the touching conclusion of the night.
Bad Windsheim is a spa town in the Neustadt an der Aisch district, featuring a brine spa and a baroque old town. The open-air museum on the outskirts is the region's most important attraction and a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience Franconian folk culture.
The MuseumsNacht 2026 runs on Saturday, June 20, from 6:00 PM to 11:59 PM, with an opening concert starting at 5:00 PM in the Spitalkirche. The museum grounds become a grand stage with music, readings, magic, and a fire show at numerous locations.
