New Literature Festival for Children, Teenagers, and Families
Wortfunken is a new literature festival by the City of Nuremberg in the Bavarian administrative region of Middle Franconia. The focus is on children, teenagers, and families: the festival aims to ignite enthusiasm for stories, books, and reading, bringing literature to a young audience in a lively, accessible way.
The three-day festival will take place at several locations in the city: the City Library Centre, the Education Centre at Gewerbemuseumsplatz, the Nicolaus Copernicus Planetarium, and several district libraries. This distribution makes Wortfunken a city-wide event and involves various neighbourhoods.
Prominent authors will be featured at the premiere: Flix will open the festival with his young adult novel, and Ursula Poznanski, one of the most successful German-language young adult authors, will read from her Erebos series. From the outset, Wortfunken is thus committed to high-calibre names in children's and young adult literature.
In addition to readings, the programme includes numerous workshops and hands-on activities: manga drawing, BookTok workshops, gaming, app-based treasure hunts, children's theatre, storytelling, music, crafts, and face painting. Many activities are accessible free of charge.
With its first edition in 2026, Nuremberg is establishing a new cultural tradition. Wortfunken complements the city's rich literary life with a format that puts the youngest generations at its centre.
The first edition runs from Friday to Sunday, January 23rd to 25th, 2026, at various locations in Nuremberg. It opens on Friday at 4 PM with Flix reading from his young adult novel "Immerland. Die Stadt der Ewigkeit"; at 7 PM, Ursula Poznanski will read from the Erebos series.
Saturday is primarily dedicated to workshops, including manga drawing and BookTok workshops at the City Library Centre. On Sunday, the programme features readings, gaming, manga drawing, an app-based treasure hunt, children's theatre, storytelling, music, crafts, and face painting. Admission on Sunday is free.
Admission to many events is free, and admission is generally free on Sundays. Some workshops and readings require registration.
Nuremberg is easily accessible by ICE and train. The City Library Centre and the Education Centre at Gewerbemuseumsplatz are centrally located and well-connected by underground and bus. The district libraries are accessible via Nuremberg's local public transport.
Many events are free. Some workshops and readings require registration.
As programme items are spread across multiple locations, it is advisable to check the programme at wortfunken.de in advance for route planning.
