Anniversary Gala for the 1050th Anniversary of the World-Famous Boys' Choir
The Regensburg Cathedral Choir is one of the oldest and most famous boys' choirs in the world. Its history dates back to the year 975 — in 2026, the choir celebrates its 1050th anniversary. The festive highlight is the anniversary gala "Happy Birthday, Spatz!" in the Audimax of the University of Regensburg.
At the evening gala on July 5, 2026, all choirs of the Cathedral Choir will perform together with guests. The evening promises music and surprising moments — and above all, an honest, unvarnished look at what makes the Cathedral Choir strong at its core. It is not merely a representative concert, but a celebration that puts the choir's identity at the center.
The day after the gala, on July 6, 2026, Bishop Rudolf Voderholzer will celebrate a Pontifical Mass in Regensburg Cathedral of St. Peter with all four concert choirs. The service commemorates three anniversaries: 1050 years of the Cathedral Choir, 1700 years of the Nicene Creed, and 500 years of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina.
The gala is part of a rich anniversary program: from the Passion music in March to the JUNGE STIMMEN festival with international boys' choirs, the anniversary album "1050", to the Holy Week liturgy. The entire year 2026 in Regensburg, a UNESCO World Heritage city in the Upper Palatinate, is dedicated to the Cathedral Choir.
