Open Air against a Princely Backdrop
The Thurn und Taxis Schlossfestspiele take place in the courtyard of the Princely Palace St. Emmeram – the ancestral seat of the Thurn und Taxis noble family, located in the heart of Regensburg. The organiser is ODEON Concerte. The unique combination of historic palace architecture and a cross-genre programme makes the festival one of the outstanding summer events in the state of Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate.
A Programme Between Opera and Pop
The hallmark of the Schlossfestspiele is its deliberate breadth: Verdi opera one evening, Schlager or rock the next. The 2026 festival opens with Giuseppe Verdi's 'La Traviata' in a production by the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg. This is followed by a festive opera gala with star tenor Jonathan Tetelman, performances by Andrea Berg, David Garrett, the Italian cult band Ricchi e Poveri, rock legend Peter Maffay, the orchestral gala 'The Sound of James Bond', Álvaro Soler, and concluding with the American jazz and soul star Gregory Porter. For younger audiences, there is also the children's opera 'Die kleine Zauberflöte'.
Regensburg – UNESCO World Heritage
The venue for the festival is the World Heritage city of Regensburg, whose medieval old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Princely Palace St. Emmeram, which evolved from the former St. Emmeram's Abbey, is one of the largest inhabited palaces in Europe. Its courtyard offers an unparalleled atmosphere – history, architecture, and music merge under the open sky.
Cultural Significance
The Thurn und Taxis Schlossfestspiele are renowned beyond the region and are among the major open-air festivals in Southern Germany. They attract a broad audience from Regensburg, the Upper Palatinate, and all of Bavaria each year, combining top-class classical music with popular entertainment in a unique setting.
