Tradition from Lignite Mining History

The Bergmannsfest in Brieskow-Finkenheerd has its roots in the region's mining history: In the 20th century, open-cast lignite mining was intensively carried out here — in the transitional area between the Lusatian and Lower Lusatian lignite mining districts. The municipality of Brieskow-Finkenheerd, located about 12 km south of Frankfurt (Oder), was home to many miners, and the festival honors the heritage of this mining culture every early summer. Even though the large open-cast mines have long since been reclaimed, the miners' pride lives on in the festival culture — with uniforms of the historical mining band, the traditional miners' greeting "Glück auf!" (Good luck!), and a typical East Brandenburg village program.

Three Festival Days in the Ziltendorfer Niederung

The Bergmannsfest 2026 spans three days. It kicks off on Friday, July 3rd, starting at 3:00 PM at the Ziltendorfer Niederung primary school — a preparatory school and children's festival that involves the younger generation. The actual festival days are then Saturday and Sunday, July 4th and 5th. The festival grounds in the village center will feature a stage, gastronomic stands, and a children's area. Expected program highlights include: a parade of miners in historical uniforms, the mining band, concerts by regional bands in the evening, a family program during the day, and dancing in the festival tent.

Culinary Delights and Atmosphere

The culinary offerings are typically East Brandenburg: Bratwurst and fries, wild goulash, Knieperkohl (a regional specialty made from white cabbage, kale, and sauerkraut), along with regional beer — breweries from Lusatia are usually represented. Sundays traditionally feature a morning pint (Frühschoppen) and a family program. Admission to the festival grounds is usually free; food and drinks are subject to a charge.

Brieskow-Finkenheerd — Transition between the Oder and Spreewald

Brieskow-Finkenheerd has about 2,600 inhabitants and is located in the Oder-Spree district, at the transition from the Oder floodplain to the northern Spreewald foreland. The Amt Brieskow-Finkenheerd administers several municipalities in this region. The Bergmannsfest, along with the traditional club life of Brieskow-Finkenheerd, is one of the central events of the year — the moment when former residents return and the village becomes the social heart of the area.
