Three days of community celebration at Saseler Markt — Tradition since 1975
Sasel is one of the so-called Walddörfer (forest villages) in Hamburg's Wandsbek district — a series of northern districts incorporated in the 20th century that have retained their village character. The Saseler Markt is the heart of the district, a square with a weekly market, shops, and cafés. Every September, it becomes the festival grounds: then the Saseler Heimatfest takes place.
The Heimatfest has been held since 1975. The 50th edition was celebrated in 2025 — a milestone for a local community association that organizes the festival on a voluntary basis. The organizer is the Saseler Heimatfestverein (Sasel Heimatfest Association), which has been organizing the event since its inception.
The name says it all: Heimatfest sounds nostalgic, but it represents a distinct tradition in Northern Germany. The focus is not on commercial entertainment like at large city festivals (Stadtfest), but on the district itself. The clubs — from the shooting club and the scouts to the volunteer fire brigade — show what they do, and the residents of Sasel meet for a beer or coffee.
The Heimatfest is designed to be family-friendly. Carousels and craft stalls are aimed at children, while the evening music program is for adults. Anyone living in or visiting the green north of Hamburg should stop by on a September weekend — Saseler Markt shows itself at its most convivial.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition unbroken since 1975. The Saseler Heimatfestverein organizes the festival on a voluntary basis, filling Saseler Markt for three days with stalls, stages, and family activities.
The focus is on the clubs and institutions from Sasel and the surrounding Walddörfer. They present their work, connect with new residents, and ensure that community life remains visible with bratwurst and beer.
Detailed program will be published on saseler-heimatfest.de.

The flea market on Sunday is worthwhile — as is the festival finale in the evening with music and family entertainment. Visitors unfamiliar with the area can combine their visit with a walk in the nearby Volksdorf Forest.
