Advent crafts at Sasel-Haus – around 70 exhibitors in northeastern Hamburg
Sasel is a well-kept residential district in the north of the Wandsbek borough, characterized by single-family homes, old trees, and a quiet suburban atmosphere. In the midst of it stands the Sasel-Haus: a community and meeting center from the 1970s, supported by dedicated Sasel residents. It hosts courses, lectures, concerts, theater evenings, and several times a year, the arts and crafts markets for which the house is known far beyond Sasel.
The Christmas Arts and Crafts Market brings together about 70 artisans from Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and Lower Saxony. The spectrum is broad: handmade jewelry, ceramics (thrown and cast), textile works (knitting, felt, patchwork), woodwork (bowls, tools, toys), glassblowing, printmaking (linocuts, woodcuts), paper crafts (bookbinding, calendars), and culinary offerings (jams, liqueurs, gingerbread, pralines). The market is strictly curated – no mass-produced goods, no cheap jewelry, but handcrafted individual pieces.
The exhibition space is spread over two floors of the Sasel-Haus – the ground floor hall and the first floor. The atmosphere is focused, calm, explicitly "non-touristy." Those looking for gift shopping beyond mass-produced goods will find a reliable selection here. The house's café and cafeteria are open during market hours, offering coffee, tea, mulled wine, gingerbread, and soup.
Sasel has two central summer highlights (Sasel Folk Festival, Farmers' Market) and three arts and crafts market dates at the Sasel-Haus (Spring, Autumn, Advent). Within the Wandsbek district, the Sasel-Haus market is the most important arts and crafts format in the north. In Hamburg's overall festival calendar, it is one of a series of similar arts and crafts markets (Tibarg, Bergstedt, Tonndorf, Bramfeld) – the Sasel-Haus market stands out for its curated selection of stalls and its atmosphere.
The 2026 edition continues the established tradition: 2nd Advent weekend, two days, seven hours of opening time each. The approx. 70 exhibiting workshops come from the Hamburg region, Schleswig-Holstein, and Lower Saxony, with a few from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Brandenburg.
The selection of stalls is curated – the Sasel-Haus team selects annually from over 200 applications. This guarantees a consistently high level of craftsmanship. The café on site offers coffee, mulled wine, gingerbread, and soup; proceeds go to the volunteer work of the Sasel-Haus.
