Around 70 artisans showcase their spring and Easter creations at Sasel-Haus in Hamburg's Walddörfer
Anyone wanting to see what a Hamburg district house looks like two weeks before Easter should visit the Sasel-Haus. Around 70 stalls are packed onto two floors – set up in halls, corridors, staircases, and side rooms. Every other square meter displays something that can be given as a gift, placed on your own shelf, or hung on the Easter tree.
The assortment is deliberately curated broadly: ceramics (bowls, cups, vases, mini-sculptures), jewellery (silver, gemstones, recycled materials), textiles (scarves, shawls, felt creations), wood art (boards, toys, tablets), glass art, photography as prints and postcards, plus specifically spring-related items: hand-painted eggs, felt or wooden Easter bunnies, spring wreaths, table decorations.
Unlike Hamburg's large markets, the Sasel-Haus focuses on handicrafts in the narrower sense: the exhibitors work in their own workshops, are often self-employed or work part-time, know their materials from practical experience, and offer unique pieces or small series. This clearly distinguishes the market from Hamburg's large tourist Christmas markets or street food festivals.
Sasel is located in the Wandsbek district, on the transition from Hamburg's city center to the Walddörfer – Berne, Volksdorf, Wohldorf, Bergstedt, Duvenstedt. The district has around 23,000 inhabitants and a distinctly green character. For decades, the Sasel-Haus has been the cultural center of the district – offering adult education courses, concerts, readings, and several markets a year (spring, autumn, Christmas).
The €2 admission fee per person goes entirely to a Sasel-Haus project – this changes every year; in recent editions, proceeds have gone to youth work or cultural education programs, for example. Thus, the admission fee also serves as support for neighborhood cultural activities in the state of Hamburg.
The date, two weeks before Easter, has been established for years: anyone looking for gifts and decorations for the Easter festival will find a curated alternative to Hamburg's large markets at the Sasel-Haus. The approximately 70 exhibitors are regionally based or travel from the surrounding areas of Northern Germany – Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony.
Over the two days, organizers expect several thousand visitors from Sasel, the other Walddörfer districts, and the entire Wandsbek district. Due to the limited space, it can get crowded during peak afternoon hours.
