Tangstedt in Stormarn

Tangstedt is a municipality with just under 6,200 inhabitants in the Stormarn district, located directly north of Hamburg. The Hamburg city limits run immediately south of the town — Tangstedt is thus located in the 'commuter belt' of the Hanseatic city, but has at the same time preserved its village identity. Dorfstraße forms the center, and the fire station at No. 28 has been one of the central meeting points for generations.

Market Character

What distinguishes Tangstedt's Christmas market from the large markets in Hamburg: it is small, manageable, and that is precisely its charm. People know each other here. The stalls are mainly run by local vendors — farm shops from the surrounding Stormarn area, craftspeople from the village, the riding club, the church community, the fire department itself. Mulled wine, bratwurst, and punch provide the typical Christmas market fare, with stalls offering fir branches, Advent wreaths, candles, and felt goods in between.

Program

Traditionally, the local brass choir performs — Advent songs on the edge of the stalls, a sound typical of North German village Christmas markets. St. Nicholas visits the children. A tombola or a wheel of fortune is usually part of the program — the proceeds benefit clubs or social causes.

Those visiting the market from Hamburg can get there in 30 minutes. Those already traveling in Stormarn (Ahrensburg, Bad Oldesloe, Reinbek) can use the Tangstedt market as a short Advent stopover away from the tourist crowds. The atmosphere is authentically rural, and the market's proceeds support local club activities.
