One District, One Mile
Bergstedt is located in the Wandsbek district, within the Hamburg Walddörfer area in the far north of the city. With around 10,000 inhabitants, the district has retained its village-like structures – single-family homes, thatched roofs, lots of greenery, and a 13th-century church with a brick tower as its centrepiece. Once a year, always on a Sunday in May, Volksdorfer Damm around this church becomes the Bunte Meile.
Flea Market, Stage, Clubs
The concept is classically North Hamburg and deliberately multi-layered. A long flea market stretches along Volksdorfer Damm – stall spaces are traditionally reserved weeks before the event at the community centre (for 2026, advance sales start on Sunday, March 29, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM). A stage presents the bands and ensembles of the Junge Musikakademie Hamburg as well as the YOU!ng Musical Academy. Local clubs – Heimatring, fire brigade, KLV, sports clubs, church community, initiatives like Zusammenleben e.V. – present themselves at stands.
Culinary Delights from Around the World
For years, the culinary aspect has been surprisingly international for a Hamburg neighbourhood festival: Albanian, Argentinian, and Georgian specialities are a regular feature, complemented by coffee, cake from surrounding gardens, bratwurst, and drinks. For children, there are craft and game activities, face painting, and a small toy market.
In the State of Hamburg, in the Wandsbek District
The Bunte Meile is an example of how even a city-state like Hamburg preserves its rural structures at its edges. Unlike the major city centre festivals (Hafengeburtstag, Reeperbahn), the Bunte Meile thrives on volunteer work, low-threshold participation, and neighbourhood density. It is a fixed part of the Walddörfer's spring calendar – anyone who knows Bergstedt, Sasel, Volksdorf, Wohldorf, or Duvenstedt knows: the first or second Sunday in May belongs to the Heimatring.
