Three open-air concert evenings on the historic Ludwigsplatz in Straubing
Straubing, with a population of just under 50,000 and home to Lower Bavaria's largest folk festival (Gäubodenvolksfest), is located in the state of Bavaria on the Danube river in the Donau-Gäuboden region. Ludwigsplatz, one of Bavaria's most beautiful city squares with the 14th-century Stadtturm (City Tower) as its striking centrepiece, has also been the venue for open-air concerts for years. The Straubinger Stadtplatz Open Air uses this historic space annually at the end of June for pop, Austropop, and tribute shows.
Kicking things off on Friday, June 26, 2026, from 8:00 PM, is Münchener Freiheit – a cult band of the 80s, firmly anchored in German pop history with their songs like "Tausendmal Du," "Ohne Dich (schlaf ich heut Nacht nicht ein)," and "Herz aus Glas." Frontman Stefan Zauner and his band have been filling concert halls and open-air venues in Germany and Austria for over four decades.
On Saturday, June 27, 2026, the six-piece band "Auf a Wort" will perform the best of Austropop: classics by STS, Reinhard Fendrich, Wolfgang Ambros, and Rainhard Fendrich. Lower Bavaria and Austria are closely connected via the Danube and its valley – it's no wonder that Austropop is particularly well-received in Straubing. The finale on Sunday, June 28, 2026, will be the ABBA Night, a tribute show featuring "Mamma Mia," "Waterloo," and "Dancing Queen" – the timeless hits of the Swedish cult band in a colourful stage show with platform shoes and glitter suits.
Ludwigsplatz Straubing has been the market square and city centre since the Middle Ages. The Gothic Stadtturm and the historic burgher houses provide an extraordinary concert backdrop. With the Stadtplatz Open Air, the city of Straubing combines cultural programming with the experience of the historic urban space – a tradition that is cherished in many Lower Bavarian cities and also characterises the Gäubodenvolksfest and the Straubinger Bürgerfest.
Alongside the Gäubodenvolksfest, the Bürgerfest, and the traditional Niederbayernschau market, the open-air series is one of the firm pillars of Straubing's summer event calendar. The summer music programme is complemented by numerous concerts at the Hagen, in the Theater am Hagen, and on the Stadtplatz itself. The event is organised by the City of Straubing in cooperation with the Theater am Hagen.
